Damnit, Tumblr.
I’m away for less than a week, and no matter how many pages I go back, there’s still things I missed. For the record, I gave up at 35.

The Spirit of Giving
claytoncubitt: iPod-to-watch conversion Kickstarter project asks for $15,000, receives $950,000, an amount which could have kept this low-income health clinic operating in New Orleans Ninth Ward for another 15 months. Instead, it will close on December 31. Enjoy your iPod watches, though. Oh, materialism. How America loves you so.

A nice take on Moore’s appearance on Maddow: “Now, I am not going to question Moore’s faith, but I wonder if he ever read John 8, in which Jesus saves a “sinning woman” from being stoned to death (the common punishment for any sex-related offense) by saying, “Let anyone among you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her” (John 8:7, NRSV). Michael Moore and Keith...

Moore surprises me a little.  Looked like he was just gonna dance around it, and he didn’t actually apologize, (and I’m skeptical of some of his claims), but a fairly strong statement. Wonder how Olbermann will respond, at this point.   And even though I don’t like him much, he’s very good at what he does.

claytoncubitt: (Susannah Breslin) Susannah Breslin is quite a good writer, and for all her cynicism and angst, I suspect she’s a lovely human being. And the same is probably true about Mr. Cubitt, as well. I frequently get the feeling he wants everyone to be living happy, fulfilled lives.  It’s sweet.

Could we at least pretend not to be selling out the average American? Just a little bit? I mean, sure, no one really expects the gov’t to do anything put roll over and play dead when it comes to regulating Wall St. and corporations with billions at their disposal, but seriously, you couldn’t throw the people a bone with a level playing field on the internet? How are we supposed to...

a very Jaz-y Christmas? I just put together a mix of upbeat Killing Joke tunes, and realized that most of them could be tangentially thought of as ‘holiday’ songs (if you’re me).  Very tempted to bundle it up and put it online…

Corporations do not share our priorities. They are hive organisms constructed out of teeming workers who join or leave the collective: those who participate within it subordinate their goals to that of the collective, which pursues the three corporate objectives of growth, profitability, and pain avoidance. (The sources of pain a corporate organism seeks to avoid are lawsuits, prosecution, and a...

The impacts associated with 3.6 degrees F have been revised upwards, sufficiently so 3.6 degrees F now more appropriately represents the threshold between ‘dangerous’ and ‘extremely dangerous’ climate change. Adapting to 7.2 degrees F of warming will be more challenging and qualitatively different from adapting to 3.6 degrees F of warming. Average warming of 7.2 degrees F...

These, aspects of an increasingly brutal, exploitative and repressive capitalist system, are among the reasons why Obamamania has bitten the dust. Obama’s electoral coalition was built around the promise of amelioration, a better deal for workers and peace abroad, and neither has been delivered. Obama has been far more completely Wall Street’s president than anyone expected. While...

Freezing Out Hope - NYTimes.com →
…he apparently intended the pay freeze announcement as a peace gesture to Republicans the day before a bipartisan summit. At that meeting, Mr. Obama, who has faced two years of complete scorched-earth opposition, declared that he had failed to reach out sufficiently to his implacable enemies. He did not, as far as anyone knows, wear a sign on his back saying “Kick me,” although he might as...

“We may have to abandon this notion of using the Milky Way as a template for the rest of the universe,” Dr. van Dokkum said. If the findings are correct, an undercount of dwarfs would mean astronomers have underestimated the masses of galaxies, and that would mean that galaxies developed earlier and faster than currently thought. And some people wonder why I am pretty critical of the stand...
